From the Administrative Manager...

2007 was a busy, fun year for MCA. The Annual Institute saw hundreds of new attendees from around the state. Individuals who are new to the conference and new to the profession. It was a great chance to show of MCA and what we can do for our members. 2008 looks to be an even better year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the association and plan a return to Duluth, a city which holds fond memories for so many MCA members. Please let me know what MCA can do for you in the new year. Your ideas are what keep MCA moving forward for everyone.

The 2007 MCA Fall Institute is now a thing of the past, but will certainly be remembered by many folks for some time. According to the survey/feedback information MCA received from conference participants, the Institute was overwhelmingly rated as a success! Surveys cited the variety of workshops and training; professional caliber of the keynote speakers; and, of course loved the entertainment and food. (The way to Corrections’ hearts for sure!)

Also noted by many attendees were the networking opportunities with such a diverse population in attendance. Corrections, law enforcement, human services, treatment, academics/students, vendors – all presented a great opportunity to offer support for our common interests, explore different philosophies, and, on more than one occasion to challenge each other. I believe it is true that our strength lies not solely in our ability to reach consensus on issues, but to also open our minds to views that may be different from ours.

At this time, I would like to thank the Fall Institute Chair, all the sub-committees and other members who worked so hard to make this conference a success. It is a difficult job, done by volunteers who also have families, careers and other interests they must also devote their time and attention to. Congratulations again to this year’s MCA award recipients. The winners symbolize innovative ideas and some of the best and brightest folks in Corrections. Bravo!

As this year draws to a close, I am amazed at how quickly the time has flown for me this past year. Although there have certainly been some frustrations and more than a few “humbling” moments, it has been an incredibly positive experience. It has been said (somewhere) that if you are in a position in which you have little experience, a strategy is to surround yourself with good, knowledgeable people. (a somewhat loose interpretation but you get the drift…). This has certainly proven to be the case for me this past year. This years’ Board of Directors have been incredibly helpful and generous with their expertise and guidance. They have been supportive, but also challenged me and; on occasion, picked me up after I stumbled on an issue or protocol. MCA is lucky to have such a dedicated, fun group of people running this organization. This was truly a team effort, and instrumental in helping us reach many of our goals for this year.

MCA is now wrapping up activities for this year, and beginning to plan and prepare for 2008. As we gear up for our 75th anniversary, I would once again invite members to consider joining one of our committees or help out in another manner of their choosing. It will be a special year for MCA and you won’t want to miss out on the fun!!

Merry Christmas; Happy Hanukkah and here’s to a healthy, happy 2008!!!!!!!

Thanks to our 2007 Board....
